Meet Steve
As a State Representative, Steve has been a strong Democratic voice for organized labor, public education, affordable healthcare, and safer neighborhoods. He understands that rising costs are squeezing families and believes Democrats must fight to lower everyday expenses by expanding access to affordable childcare, supporting good-paying union jobs, investing in schools, and making housing and healthcare more affordable for working families. A small business owner and longtime community leader, Steve knows government should stand with working people, not corporate insiders or special interests. In the State Senate, Steve Butz will continue fighting for Democratic values that put South St. Louis families first and ensure every family has the opportunity to succeed.
Steve Butz is a lifelong South St. Louis Democrat whose commitment to public service is rooted in faith, family, and community. Steve’s Priorities in Fighting for YOU
-

Quality Education
Steve Butz believes every child deserves access to a quality education, no matter their ZIP code. As a State Representative, he voted for the largest investment in public education in decades and has consistently supported increased pay for teachers, expanded transportation funding, and stronger investments in safe and supportive learning environments. Steve supports accountability in education while also investing in pathways that prepare students for the future, including community colleges, vocational training programs, apprenticeships, and local universities like UMSL and Harris-Stowe.

Access to Affordable Healthcare
Steve Butz understands that affordable healthcare is essential for strong families and healthy communities. In the legislature, he supported Medicaid expansion, paid family leave, and increased investments in mental health care and rehabilitation resources. Steve believes Missouri must continue protecting access to contraception and reproductive healthcare while investing in drug treatment programs and environmental protections that improve long-term public health outcomes for families across the state.
-

Common Sense Firearms Laws
Steve Butz believes Missouri can protect constitutional rights while also passing common-sense measures that improve public safety. Steve supports raising the minimum age for gun purchases to 21, banning bump stocks and high-capacity magazines, and expanding real-time universal background checks. He has also sponsored legislation promoting firearm safety education for young people participating in hunting and recreational shooting activities.

He has consistently supported raising the minimum wage, protecting unemployment benefits, expanding access to affordable childcare, and defending the rights of workers to earn fair wages and benefits that can support a family.
